Environmental Engineering Degree

Earning an environmental engineering degree is like signing up to be nature's police. It's gearing up to fight the evils that have severely affected the environment, not just in the United States but in the whole world.

What do environmental engineers do?

The principles of chemistry and biology are the most relevant in an environmental engineering degree program. Environmental deterioration did not happen overnight and determining the cause will lead to the solution.

Environmental engineers deal with wastewater treatment, toxic materials, air pollution and other environmental hazards. It involves a lot of collecting data, analyzing them, performing quality control checks and devising solutions to address aberrations.

And because environmental problems are a matter of life and death, you need more than environmental engineering degrees to be good at your job. It takes a lot of commitment and dedication to succeed in this field.

Climate change is a reality that has to be dealt with. And you can be part of the team that will solve the problems resulting from this with an environmental engineering degree.

Specialized field of study

Because this is a specialized field of study, associate degrees or undergraduate certificate programs are not common. Instead, a bachelor's degree and more often a master's degree is needed to find work opportunities.

However, some colleges and universities do offer online certificate programs on certain aspects of environmental engineering. These are not considered a graduate degree, but are supplemental courses for those already holding a bachelor's degree in this discipline.

At the bachelor level -- usually completed in five years -- other than math and science courses there are specific environmental engineering subjects that form part of the coursework. Examples are air pollution engineering, environmental risk assessment and principles of environmental engineering.

A master degree usually focuses on certain aspects of environment such as management and protection of resources, water quality, or pollution control.

There are certain engineering schools, such as Michigan Technological University, where the environmental engineering degree is in conjunction with a civil engineering degree.

Be part of the solution

Even if the specialization is relatively new, environmental engineering careers have a lot of potential given the growing problems that need to be addressed. Environmental technicians earned salaries between $40,000 and $50,000, while environmental engineers had a median income of $69,940.

Environmental engineers also work in land management, toxic materials control and industrial hygiene.

An environmental engineering degree is also helpful for those who end up as environmental sales engineers. Making use of their education and expertise, they are better able to sell equipment and services relative to this field.

If we are to save the planet and leave the future generation with a healthy and productive environment, then we need to act now. Earn an environmental engineering degree and contribute towards achieving this goal.
